Laurel Festival

Over this past weekend I set up my booth for the first warm weather festival in a very long time. This festival has been active for over 80 years in our town and while  it celebrates the abundant local Mountain Laurel it is also an opportunity for young ladies to be celebrated for their grades, community spirit, and to win scholarship money. Until this year the Laurel Festival was a 3 day event with a ball and a parade before the naming of the new Laurel Queen, but financial constraints caused a change in the program and I think it might just be a change for the better, well, at least the Sunday portion of the event. This was the day of the parade when the young ladies were driven through town in decorated vehicles, but this year they decorated booths in the park as an alternative and my “green” side likes this idea immensely. An added bonus was that the ladies were readily accessible for conversations and questions which doesn’t happen as they are passing through the parade route.

I must admit that while I was packing up my car in the slightly humid and overcast morning it came back to me one of the reasons why it has been a while since I’ve done one of these shows. It was a funny day weather-wise as it would be calm and humid then dry and breezy, but I was able to set up near a tree so we had plenty of shade to enjoy. I was also lucky enough o have a friend attend this event and set up next to my booth so we also got to chat and knit together through the afternoon. I was still knitting dishcloths, but their simple nature was valued yesterday while I people watched and chatted with friends and strangers alike. Happily  no mistakes were found in the end products from my lack of attention.

I didn’t sell very much,  but I was attending this festival as an investment in the future. It’s local and I’ve always thought that small local events of this sort would be fun. I was not mistaken. It would be very nice if this portion of the festival was to stay this way and I look forward to attending this as an annual event. Is there a favorite fair or festival in your area?

Crocheting has reigned

It seems like I’ve had a hook in my hands more lately than not and I’m always surprised at how much I miss it. Perhaps it would be easier if I had 4 hands so that I could knit and crochet at the same time, but since I suspect that this isn’t going to happen then maybe I should just organize my projects a bit better. I’ve been on a kitchen towel binge lately as I’ve the local farmer’s market coming up soon and I don’t have lots of warm weather items.

Another treat for me to do was a doily I gave for a donation basket. I looked a the very few doilies that I have made up and discovered that I didn’t have a single round one made so off I went to lose half a day to perusing my pattern books. It’s been a very long time since I’ve done that and may I just say that it’s a delightful pastime. The only real problem is that there are now a dozen more projects added to my list.

Next up are crocheted roses. I’m making an few different roses for my future daughter-in-law to use in the centerpieces for their wedding reception in September. It’s fun looking at all of the patterns, but allergies are making some of the small work a little tough. Soon, however, the blooms which I love, but give me grief, will be past and then I’ll be creating a veritable garden in my living room. Much too much fun. What is the last thing that you crocheted?

Fiber in the great outdoors

Here in northwest Connecticut the weather has been cooperating enough that with a sweater on I’ve been able to spend time on the deck with my toys. On a sunny Sunday morning I carried my 7′ triangle loom out and set it up in the sheltered corner of the deck. It was a great idea, but the wind was still made it too much of a challenge to weave so it traveled back inside in short order.

I then moved around the corner into the sun with my spinning wheel and roving from Paradise Fibers. I admit that I did do a bit of hopping around out there, chasing the sun, but overall it was a great afternoon and I finished up that yarn. I then got to start on the roving I bought from Barbara Parry at the NY Wool and Sheep Festival last fall. It’s very, very nice.

On Monday afternoon, after work, I opted to bring my 24″ RH loom outside to finish up a scarf I’d started the previous week. It was a much nicer day and I really enjoyed myself in the breeze even with all of the pollen. My allergies have been going lightly on my this year so I’m optimistic about more outdoor fiber time. I had to kitty proof the warp for the next scarf…she thinks it’s her personal hammock.  Do you get to spend much time outside with your choice of crafts?

More WIPS

I didn’t get the finishes that I’d hoped for this past week, but I did get other things done so I suppose it’s a decent trade-off. I’ve been talking about making pirate hats, aprons, spats, ruffled cuffs, etc. for the middle school drama group and this past week I finally got off of my duff and started. I used Julia Rosenbaum’s Very Piratey hat pattern, but I haven’t quite managed the final shaping. I’m sure that it will come.

Then I moved on to Nichole M. Verville’s Cthulhu beard hat for a Davy Jones (of movie fame) character in a peach color. I thought that it came out really well. I’m debating on making little fish or something to attach to the tentacles. We’ll see how that goes.

The last thing I made was a white apron. I think with a red cross on the front it will work out well and I think I’ll make up ruffled strips that can be attached so that it can also be used as a maid or nanny’s apron in the future.  I took them to school today and now I’m waiting on the sizes and head counts. This could turn out to be a very busy April. Next up spats and ruffled cuffs…or and a shawl or two wouldn’t be a bad idea. I did look for a traditional nurse’s cap pattern, but I couldn’t come up with a knit or crochet pattern and I’m not sure that I have the time to sort one out before they stage their play in May. What are you working on?

Hello, Again.

I’ve been absent, but not idle for a bit now and I wanted to get back into the swing of things. Computer issues and a rather crazy schedule have had me dancing in circles for a few weeks now. I am happy to say that my spinning is coming along nicely. I’ve been working on some Berry Merino roving from Paradise Fibers – it was in my Fiber Club package last month – and it’s going very smoothly. Merino was a bit of a challenge for me a few months ago, but it appears that we’ve come to an agreement which pleases both of us.

My RH loom has been busy of late also. I have a host of future projects set to go on it and I’m very excited about them all. It also looks like I might get more mileage from the KnitPicks yarns on my loom than I thought. I just love playing with the colors.

I’ve also been working steadily on my vest and my sweater although at the rate I’m going it will be next fall before I get to wear them…I hope. Spring has been just out of our reach here in northwest Connecticut and I’m longing to bring my projects out to the deck or front yard to enjoy the warm spring weather. I haven’t given up hope. So, with any luck at all next week I’ll be showing some finish pictures….it’s about time I think.

Yarn and more yarn

I’m addicted. If there was ever any doubt in my mind it’s gone now. The iris potluck roving I got from Paradise Fibers was a dream to spin and I have enough to knit up a charming, and spring-like, shawlette. I’m thrilled that I’m finally spinning a thin enough yarn to knit or crochet.

Iris handspun 002However, when a picture posted by Marji’s Yarncraft in Granby, CT prompted a yarn trip with 3 delightful women, I still came home with an armload. Now, I was a bit good, I also bought size 11 circular needles – Dreamz – in 16″ and 40″  figuring this would take care of any size 11 needle need I may have in the future, and I bought 5 skeins of lovely cotton yarn to make up some light scarves for summer shows, but I had a wildly selfish moment and purchased some yarns to use for me, myself, on cowls and a vest that I’ve wanted for quite some time.

haul 001Now, one of the reasons I bought the yarns for myself is that almost everything I make I give away or sell. I went through a few of our bitterly cold days hatless because I didn’t have one with my coat and cowl. Felt a bit foolish, I did, when I thought about the case of them upstairs in my show stock. Then, when I tried shoveling wearing a roll brim felted hat during a very windy snow storm, I realized that I could probably take the time to make myself a proper hat.

Hat 001

So, now I’m set for the rest of the winter…which is probably a good thing as it really hasn’t stopped snowing for long here and the winds have come to stay I fear, and this makes me ask the following question. How much of what you make is for you? Do you also tend to give it away or sell it?

Spinning and spinning

I think I’ve finally found my stride with my spinning wheel. It winks and waves at me daily and not an hour passes when I don’t sit down to spin for a bit. It’s still not consistent enough for me to sell, but I’m excited that it’s finally consistent enough for me to plan a project around a ball of roving. I’ve been working on an Iris potluck roving from Paradise Fibers and I love it.

iris potluck 001I ordered another potluck roving with this one and it may be the next spinning project up. It’s bright and cheery which is an added attraction with our return of winter…snowing again today. Anyway, the Iris roving and the other ball are really a pick-me-up when watching the colors twist together to make up my yarn. I’m really looking forward to dyeing!

roving 001And today I got this month’s fiber club package from Paradise Fibers. These packages are too much fun to get in the mail and on a snowy afternoon it was a double delight.

Feb fiber club package 001The pink is a merino/silk blend that should be scrumptious if I don’t mess it up. I may wait a bit before jumping into that one. I’m sorry that it took me so long to get to the stage, but I’m very glad that I’m here.

Busy, busy, busy with my yarns

I’m steadily working on filling orders and replacing stock for the shows later this year when cold weather items will be a hit, but I really want to try some new patterns and ideas out. Tea cozies are my latest love. With a circa 1970 pattern book, a wicker tray of Palette yarns from Knitpicks, and my size 6 needles I’ve been having a grand time making up cozies out of swatches. This system appeals to my thrifty nature…I’m trying out new stitches in small sizes, but not  wasting time by making them because they become a rather cute and useful finished item when done.

I admit I’ve gone a bit overboard ordering different colors to mix and match on the cozies, but how can I help it when Knitpicks has 150 colors!

studio pics 148

And they really are a quick knit and not the least boring so this has become my “undecided on my next project” project. I can always have a good time making these up.

Settling in for winter

As the weather becomes chillier and the sun sets earlier, I find myself settling right in for a long winter of spinning, dyeing, weaving, knitting, crocheting, and planning. Now that the holidays are safely behind me and the snow is falling I’m very glad that I have the hobbies and provisions to see me through the winter. The stock for my studio needs replenishing, but I find it hard to concentrate on keyhole scarves and balaclavas when there are so many new patterns to create and so much roving waiting to become amazing new yarns. It must be time to pull out my New England upbringing and do my chores before I go out to play.

future projects 001I have been working on my stock, really, I haven’t been avoiding it completely, but my mind is brimming over with ideas so I keep jotting down plans and hope that I remember how I want them to look. I should probably start sketching my ideas…my memory is not what it once was, but then it could be that the projects end up being what they are because my vision of them changes in the time between thought and action. This could make my head hurt if I let it so we’ll just move on.

Also the urge to go on a fiber hunt is very strong. I have an amazing stash and yet the yarn is calling me. I wonder if it’s temperature related? I do seem to make it through summer without buying as much yarn, but perhaps I’m just working with all of the yarns I’ve gotten through the cold months. Could this be the fiber equivalent of the chicken and the egg? Do you find yourself acquiring more yarn at a certain times of year or are you a year round buyer?
